Naseem Shah Fined for Controversial Tweet, Avoids Lengthy Ban
Naseem Shah Faces Penalty from PCB
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed a fine on pacer Naseem Shah following a tweet that criticized Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during the PSL 2026 opener held at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on March 26.
Shah has been fined PKR 2 crore (approximately $72,000) for his inappropriate social media remarks aimed at Maryam Nawaz, the daughter of Nawaz Sharif. This action was taken as it violated the PCB's central contract regulations and the code of conduct that governs players' public behavior and social media interactions.
Additionally, the PCB has banned Naseem Shah's media advisor from working with any contracted players, following the advisor's termination and subsequent blacklisting by the board due to his involvement in the incident.
Naseem Shah Avoids Lengthy Suspension
Despite being fined PKR 20 million for his tweet, Naseem Shah has successfully avoided a two-year suspension from cricket.
Former cricketer Basit Ali shared insights on ARY News, stating that PCB Chief Mohsin intervened to prevent the lengthy ban, opting for a financial penalty instead. The board aims to protect Shah's career, as he earns from the PSL and other leagues.
Ali remarked, "Naseem Shah is fortunate. There was a proposal for a two-year ban, but PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi decided against it, focusing on his future. Ending his career over a tweet would not have been appropriate."
Previous Social Media Penalties
This incident is not the first time the PCB has penalized a player for social media misconduct. Last year, all-rounder Aamer Jamal faced a $4,000 fine for a political statement supporting the imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan during PSL events.
Criticism of Naseem's Awareness
Basit Ali criticized Naseem Shah for not fully understanding his central contract, emphasizing that players should familiarize themselves with contract details rather than relying solely on their managers to avoid breaches.
"When players sign the central contract, all relevant clauses are included. Why don’t they read these documents?" Ali questioned, adding that it is beneficial for players to be informed about their contracts.
He also praised the PCB's decision, stating that a two-year ban would have been excessive.
Naseem's Performance in PSL 2026
Naseem Shah is currently playing for Rawalpindiz in PSL 2026, having been acquired for PKR 8.65 crore, making him the highest-paid player in the inaugural PSL auction. In his first match against Peshawar Zalmi, he had a challenging performance, finishing with figures of 0/51 at an economy rate of 12.75 over four overs.
He is set to return to the field when Rawalpindiz faces Karachi Kings at Gaddafi Stadium on April 2.
