Naomi Osaka Shocks World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon 2026
Osaka's Historic Victory at Wimbledon
In a stunning turn of events at Wimbledon 2026, Naomi Osaka triumphed over World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka with a score of 6-2, 7-6(2) on Centre Court, marking her first-ever quarter-final appearance at the prestigious tournament.
The four-time Grand Slam winner showcased her exceptional skills, overpowering Sabalenka, who had previously defeated her three times this season, including a loss in the fourth round of the French Open. This victory also signifies Osaka's first win against Sabalenka since the 2018 US Open, as reported by the WTA.
Osaka's win disrupted several impressive streaks, including Sabalenka's first straight-sets loss at a Grand Slam since the 2020 US Open and her remarkable run of 14 consecutive Grand Slam quarter-final appearances. Additionally, it marked Osaka's first victory over a World No. 1 since she beat Ash Barty in Beijing back in 2019.
On one of the warmest days of the tournament, Osaka took control early with her signature flat groundstrokes and powerful serves. She broke Sabalenka's serve to lead 2-1 in the first set, which she dominated, finishing it 6-2.
The second set was much more competitive, but Osaka remained calm under pressure, saving both break points she faced and pushing the match into a tie-break after neither player could secure a decisive advantage.
During the tie-break, Sabalenka's unusual mistakes allowed Osaka to take charge, ultimately winning it 7-2 and sealing her victory in just one hour and 28 minutes. She celebrated her first win on Centre Court with enthusiastic fist pumps and raised her racket in joy.
Statistically, Osaka's performance was impressive, landing 87% of her first serves compared to Sabalenka's 69%, hitting eight aces against five, and achieving 21 winners while limiting her opponent's chances throughout the match.
Having recently reached her first grass-court final in Bad Homburg before withdrawing due to a foot injury, Osaka has carried that momentum into Wimbledon. She is set to face Karolina Muchova in the quarter-finals after Muchova's victory over defending champion Barbora Krejcikova, with a score of 7-5, 5-7, 6-3.
