Pickleball Gains Traction in Nagaland

While pickleball is still emerging in various parts of India, it has already started to gain significant traction in Nagaland. Kechangulie Rio, the President of the Nagaland Cricket Association, noted that the sport's growth has been rapid and widespread, largely due to the state's established history with racket sports and an enthusiastic youth demographic. “Pickleball has only been around in Nagaland for a year or two, but its popularity has surged,” Rio shared in an exclusive interview. “The momentum is impressive, with numerous courts and facilities being established, leading to a growing community of players,” he added.

This surge in interest is not confined to any particular age group; players of all ages, from young enthusiasts to seasoned veterans, are getting involved, showcasing the sport's accessibility. “We are witnessing participation from all age demographics,” he remarked.

Rio attributed the smooth transition to pickleball to Nagaland's existing culture of racket sports, which includes tennis, table tennis, and especially badminton. “Given our strong foundation in racket sports, the shift to pickleball has been quite seamless. Our youth are agile and have adapted to the sport quickly,” he explained.

As pickleball continues to gain popularity locally, discussions about international competitions, including World Cups, are becoming more frequent. “I am optimistic about the future,” Rio stated. “The government is focused on youth, and sports are being recognized as an industry. The support and interest in sports are very promising.”

He believes this support could pave the way for young athletes from Nagaland to advance beyond local competitions. “We are hopeful that our talented youth will excel in the sport and represent the country on international platforms, whether at the World Cup or beyond,” he expressed.

As pickleball's global presence expands, the question remains about its potential in India, where traditional sports often overshadow newer ones. “Only time will tell,” Rio concluded. “However, we are optimistic. With the right support and commitment from all involved, we believe pickleball has a bright future ahead.”

Currently, Nagaland's early adoption and increasing player participation indicate that the state could significantly influence the future of pickleball in India.
