Mumbai Indians Suffer Third Consecutive Loss in IPL 2026 Against RCB
Mumbai Indians Face Defeat at Wankhede Stadium
On Sunday, the Mumbai Indians (MI) faced their third consecutive defeat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, losing to the reigning champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), by 18 runs at the Wankhede Stadium. A significant issue for the five-time champions has been their struggle to take wickets, with their total standing at just 15, and star bowler Jasprit Bumrah yet to claim a wicket in the tournament.
Rutherford Addresses Bowling Concerns
Despite the team's struggles, MI's aggressive batsman Sherfane Rutherford downplayed the concerns regarding their bowling performance. He remarked that opposing teams have simply been performing well. "It's definitely not a concern. If we are honest, other teams bat well. We need to give credit where it's due," Rutherford stated during a press conference.
"It's just small margins for us. We might need to adjust a couple of field placements. I don't think it's primarily about our bowlers; it's about executing better and improving," he added.
Rutherford's Efforts Fall Short
Rutherford's impressive innings of 71 runs off 31 balls was not enough to secure a win for MI. His score is the second-highest for MI batting at No. 6 or lower, following Hardik Pandya's 91 runs against KKR in 2019. Rutherford hit nine sixes, tying the record for the most sixes by an MI player batting at No. 6 or below, alongside Pandya.
He believes that MI's recent losses have been due to narrow margins, despite their thorough preparation and teamwork. "I think it's just small margins. Our preparation has been solid, and as a unit, we have been working well. The last game was decided by a few runs, and the same goes for this match. It's crucial for us to keep learning from these close calls," he explained.
Match Summary: RCB Triumphs Over MI
In a thrilling IPL 2026 encounter at Wankhede Stadium, RCB narrowly defeated MI by 18 runs, thanks to stellar half-centuries from Phil Salt, Virat Kohli, and Rajat Patidar, who helped RCB post a total of 240 runs for 4 wickets. MI managed to score 222 runs for 5 wickets, despite a late surge from Sherfane Rutherford.
This victory marks RCB's second consecutive win against MI at Wankhede, breaking a six-match losing streak since 2016. With this win, RCB climbs to third place in the points table, having secured three victories out of four matches, while MI falls to eighth place with only one win in four games, currently on a three-match losing streak.
