Jayawardene's Excitement Over De Kock's Acquisition

The head coach of Mumbai Indians, Mahela Jayawardene, expressed his happiness following the franchise's successful bid for South African wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock, who was acquired at his base price of ₹1 crore during the IPL auction.

A Fortunate Signing

In his remarks about the signing, Jayawardene acknowledged that the Mumbai Indians were fortunate to secure De Kock. He humorously noted, "We were lucky (laughs). Quinny has been a part of MI in various franchises and previously with us," as reported by a sports news outlet.

Strengthening the Squad

The former Sri Lankan captain emphasized the need to bolster the top order and enhance the team's depth. He stated, "We wanted to ensure we have depth in that crucial spot at the top of the order, which provides us flexibility in the playing XI."

De Kock's Previous Success with MI

Quinton de Kock has a history of success with the Mumbai Indians, having played 43 matches for the team and scoring 1,329 runs at an average of 34.08, with a strike rate of 131.32 and 10 half-centuries.

De Kock's T20 Career Overview

Recently, De Kock reversed his decision to retire from white-ball international cricket and rejoined the South African national team. He has accumulated 2,706 runs in 99 T20 internationals for South Africa, averaging 30.40 with a strike rate exceeding 139, including one century and 17 half-centuries, making him the leading run-scorer for his country in this format.

In total T20 matches, he has scored 11,543 runs across 416 games, maintaining an average of 30.94 and a strike rate above 138, with seven centuries and 76 fifties.

In the IPL, De Kock has amassed 3,309 runs in 115 matches while playing for various teams, including Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants, and Kolkata Knight Riders. He averages 30.63 in the league with a strike rate above 134, featuring two centuries and 24 fifties.

Last season with Kolkata Knight Riders was challenging for De Kock, as he managed only 152 runs in eight matches, averaging 21.71 with a strike rate close to 130, and his highest score being an unbeaten 97.
