Mumbai Indians' Auction Strategy

The Mumbai Indians (MI) approached the IPL 2026 mini auction with the least financial resources, holding only Rs 2.75 crore after retaining most of their roster. Despite this limitation, they successfully acquired South African batter Quinton de Kock for a mere Rs 1 crore.

Ravichandran Ashwin, a former Indian cricketer, commended MI for their acquisition of De Kock, labeling it a clever decision and indicating that rival teams overlooked a valuable opportunity. De Kock, who previously played for MI from 2019 to 2021, was the standout purchase at the auction, joining the team at his base price.

Prior to the auction, the five-time champions had already strengthened their squad by trading for Sherfane Rutherford, Shardul Thakur, and Mayank Markande.

Ashwin's Insights on MI's Strategy

Ashwin praised MI's strategic signing of De Kock, noting that while other franchises hesitated, MI capitalized on the opportunity. He suggested that MI is aiming to recreate their successful IPL 2020 championship team, despite the absence of Ishan Kishan. He remarked that even with a limited budget of Rs 2.75 crore, MI has enhanced their already strong lineup.

"The acquisition of Quinton de Kock was a smart move. Other franchises seemed to be complacent, while MI seized the chance. They appear to be uncertain about the opening combination with Rickelton, and they are trying to replicate their IPL 2020 championship squad, minus Ishan Kishan," Ashwin shared on his YouTube channel.

"Although MI had only Rs 2.75 crore, it felt like they had Rs 27 crore due to the number of players they acquired. They already had a winning team before the auction, and now they look even more formidable," he concluded.

Additional Acquisitions by MI

In addition to De Kock, MI also secured Danish Malewar, Mohammad Izhar, Atharva Ankolekar, and Mayank Rawat during the IPL 2026 auction.
