Increased Competition with 10 Teams

The Mumbai Indians (MI), who have clinched the IPL title five times, have not secured a championship since 2020. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene expressed that the introduction of 10 teams has intensified the competition, necessitating continuous effort from his squad. During a press conference ahead of their match against the Delhi Capitals, he remarked, "The presence of 10 teams makes the competition even tougher. Over the past five years, we have reached the playoffs twice, indicating that we have had our chances in the crucial moments."

Recent Performance and Strong Start to 2026

MI has struggled to qualify for the playoffs in the 2021, 2022, and 2024 seasons, finishing fourth in both 2023 and 2025. They found themselves at the bottom of the points table in 2022 and 2024. However, the team kicked off their 2026 season with a remarkable victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), successfully chasing down a target of 221 runs, marking their highest successful chase in IPL history. This win also marked their first season-opening victory in 14 years, since 2012.

Emphasizing the Importance of Process

"We must approach each game individually and adhere to our processes. As a team, we have consistently performed well over time. We need to maintain our trust in this process and continue playing quality cricket to achieve our goals. Our success has stemmed from this approach, so there’s no reason to change it," Jayawardene stated. He emphasized the necessity for MI players to adopt a winning mindset both on and off the field, believing that positive results will follow. "If we push ourselves to excel in every match and maintain a strong attitude, we will evolve into a better team and franchise. The results will naturally follow without the added pressure," he added.

A Message to Other Franchises

Jayawardene also addressed other IPL franchises that have yet to win a title, saying, "At the start of the season, we acknowledge that we haven't won in five years. However, some teams have never won at all. I’m not trying to boast, but we believe in trusting our process and focusing on our own development." He concluded, "We aspire to win every year, but that’s not always feasible. The competition is fierce, and we must continue to strive for success."
