Rohit Sharma's Tactical Usage in IPL 2025

Mahela Jayawardene, the head coach of Mumbai Indians, has shared insights into the team's strategy of utilizing veteran opener Rohit Sharma as an impact player during the ongoing IPL 2025 season.

Rohit Sharma has been seen less frequently on the field, often entering as an impact player instead of starting in the playing XI when Mumbai Indians bowl first. The 36-year-old cricketer has recently regained his form, scoring three fifties in his last four matches after a challenging start where he managed only 82 runs at an average of 13 in the first six games.

Jayawardene Discusses the Decision

During a press conference ahead of the match against Gujarat Titans, Jayawardene explained that the decision to use Rohit as an impact substitute was tactical, aimed at optimizing the team's composition with players capable of bowling and providing speed in the field. He noted that Rohit is dealing with a minor injury and the team wanted to avoid overexerting him.

"It wasn't a pre-planned strategy. Rohit played in some matches, but the team needed players who could perform dual roles, especially in venues requiring boundary runners," Jayawardene stated.

"Rohit has been nursing a niggle since the Champions Trophy, so we aimed to manage his workload while ensuring batting remains a priority," he added.

Rohit Sharma's Performance and Contribution

Rohit Sharma's early performance faced criticism, but he turned things around in the last four matches, helping Mumbai Indians secure six consecutive victories after a shaky start. Currently, he ranks as the third-highest run-scorer for the team in IPL 2025, with 293 runs, including three fifties, at an average of 32.55 and a strike rate of 155.02 across 10 matches.

Jayawardene Highlights Rohit's Influence

Jayawardene emphasized Rohit’s significant role within the team, even when he is not on the field. He mentioned that Rohit actively communicates with the team from the dugout and contributes during strategic timeouts.

"His involvement is crucial, whether on the field or off. He engages with the team during timeouts, ensuring effective communication," Jayawardene remarked.

"Our overall strategy is to maintain all necessary bowling options on the field, and having experienced players like Rohit is invaluable. The decision on who to replace is challenging, but it's a positive dilemma to have," he concluded.

Mumbai Indians' Current Standing

As of now, Mumbai Indians hold the third position in the points table, with seven wins and four losses, totaling 14 points from 10 matches. The team, led by Hardik Pandya, aims to continue their winning momentum against Gujarat Titans at Wankhede Stadium on Tuesday, May 6.
