Coach Provides Update on Yadav's Condition

After the Mumbai Indians' first match of the IPL 2026 against the Kolkata Knight Riders on March 29, head coach Mahela Jayawardene clarified the situation regarding Suryakumar Yadav's fitness.

There was considerable speculation when Yadav, the captain of India's T20I team, was not included in the starting lineup and was instead designated as an Impact Sub. Fans were curious about his absence from the main squad, particularly given his importance to the team.

During the post-match press conference, Jayawardene revealed that Yadav was experiencing tightness in his groin. He noted that while Yadav was fit enough to bat, he was not ready to field for long durations.

Coach Explains the Decision

Jayawardene urged against creating unnecessary narratives, stating, "The camp is very happy. Everyone’s happy. Sky came, joined us. He had an extra couple of days he wanted as well. He joined. He had a little tight groin. He was doing fielding and all that. I knew I had another 5 days from this game to the other game. I just wanted to give him that extra bit of time. He was even keen at the end to go for 3-4 overs."

Yadav entered the game as an Impact Sub at No. 3 during the second innings, hitting a boundary on his first ball and finishing with 16 runs off eight balls, which included three fours and a strike rate of 200.

Match Summary

The Mumbai Indians achieved their first opening match victory since 2012, defeating the Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets with five balls to spare.

KKR batted first, scoring 220/4, with notable contributions from Ajinkya Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi, both of whom scored half-centuries. Shardul Thakur was the standout bowler for Mumbai, taking three wickets, while Hardik Pandya added one.

In response, MI's openers set a solid foundation, with Rohit Sharma scoring 78 and Ryan Rickelton leading the score with 81. Their partnership kept the chase on track, despite KKR bowlers Sunil Narine, Kartik Tyagi, and Vaibhav Arora each taking one wicket, which was not enough to stop Mumbai's strong finish.
