MCC Celebrates Cricket Legends with Honorary Membership
Moeen Ali and Meg Lanning, two prominent figures in contemporary cricket, have been awarded Honorary Life Membership by the esteemed Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). This recognition was announced on Thursday, highlighting their significant contributions and influence in the world of cricket.
Moeen, known for his stylish all-rounder skills, made his Test debut at Lord's in 2014. His career has been marked by flair, determination, and numerous accolades. With a total of 6,678 runs and 366 wickets in international cricket, he has proven to be a formidable player, often flying under the radar. His achievements include winning the Ashes twice, securing World Cups in both the 50-over and T20 formats, and setting the record for England's fastest T20I fifty. A memorable hat-trick at The Oval further cemented his legacy. Moeen expressed his gratitude, stating,
"It's a tremendous honour to be awarded Honorary Life Membership of MCC. To be listed alongside so many cricketing greats is truly humbling. I'm really thankful to the Club for this, as being made an HLM is very special. I always enjoyed playing at Lord's and it was an incredible feeling to walk out at such a historic venue."
MCC Recognizes Cricket's Elite with Special Tribute
On the other hand, Lanning, Australia's celebrated captain, has rewritten the record books with her poise and leadership. She debuted at the young age of 18 and has since captained Australia in 182 matches. Her impressive collection of trophies includes four T20 World Cups, a 50-over World Cup title, and a gold medal from the Commonwealth Games. With 17 international centuries and 8,352 runs, she has established herself as one of the most reliable players in cricket history. Lanning remarked,
"I'm thrilled to be awarded Honorary Life Membership of MCC, becoming part of a prestigious Club and following in the footsteps of a long line of fantastic cricketers, both from Australia and around the world. It is a huge privilege, as it always has been to play at Lord's both internationally and domestically, and I am honoured to accept the invitation."
This recognition from the MCC follows the recent Life Membership awarded to Sir James Anderson by Mark Nicholas during his farewell Test at Lord's in July 2024.
Claire Taylor, Chair of the MCC Cricket Committee, remarked:
“The list of Honorary Life Members includes many of the greatest cricketers to have played the game… They have made immeasurable contributions… we are honoured to welcome them.”
