Gujarat Giants Fall Short Against Delhi Capitals

After the Gujarat Giants (GG) faced defeat against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Women's Premier League (WPL) eliminator, former Indian cricketer Mithali Raj expressed her desire to see more contributions from Indian players, especially the uncapped talents, in the Ashleigh Gardner-led team.

Match Highlights

GG struggled early, finding themselves at 59/4 after being put to bat first by DC. However, they mounted a commendable comeback, thanks to impressive performances from Georgia Wareham and a solid half-century by Beth Mooney, finishing at 168/7. Unfortunately, their bowling, which had been strong in previous matches, did not meet expectations this time. This result sets up a title match between DC and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), with DC aiming for their first WPL title and RCB seeking a WPL-IPL double.

'More from Indian Talent Needed': Mithali Raj

During her analysis on 'Match Centre Live', Mithali praised Gardner's leadership, noting her success in guiding the team to consecutive playoff appearances. However, she expressed disappointment regarding the performance of Indian uncapped players. "Sophie Devine has been outstanding with both bat and ball. Beth Mooney has shown her ability to perform under pressure. I would have liked to see more from the Indian uncapped players for the Giants. Anushka Sharma has been impressive, scoring consistently, but Tanuja Kanwar needed to take more wickets," she remarked.

"Kashvee Gautam and Renuka Singh Thakur performed well in Navi Mumbai, but they need to rise to the challenge in less favorable conditions. Kanika Ahuja must also step up as a batter when the team needs runs. The Giants have relied heavily on their overseas players this season," she added.

Performance Statistics

Here’s a look at the performance of some key players:

Player Matches Runs Average Strike Rate Best Score
Anushka Sharma 7 177 25.28 129.19 44
Tanuja Kanwar 7 0 - - -
Kashvee Gautam 9 0 - - -
Renuka Singh Thakur 9 0 - - -
Kanika Ahuja 7 71 10.14 - 35

DC's Impressive Chase

Mithali commended the 68-run partnership between Laura Wolvaardt and Jemimah Rodrigues, which followed a rapid 89-run opening stand by Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma. This partnership simplified the chase, allowing them to maintain a steady run rate. "Both Jemimah and Laura understood their roles well. The openers had already set a solid foundation, making it easier for them to play at a run-a-ball pace. Despite the pressure of an Eliminator, Jemimah led her team effectively," she noted.

Match Summary

In the GG-DC match, DC won the toss and opted to bowl first, quickly reducing GG to 59/4. Beth Mooney's unbeaten 62 runs and a partnership with Georgia Wareham helped stabilize the innings, leading GG to 168/7. Chinelle Henry was the standout bowler for DC with figures of 3/35. In response, DC's explosive start, led by Lee and Verma, set the tone for an easy chase, with Wolvaardt and Rodrigues sealing the victory. Jemimah Rodrigues was awarded 'Player of the Match', and DC will face RCB in the upcoming title match.
