Mitchell Starc Set to Rejoin Delhi Capitals for IPL 2026 After Injury Recovery
Mitchell Starc's Comeback Journey
Mitchell Starc, the Australian fast bowler, is on track to rejoin the Delhi Capitals (DC) for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. His return is anticipated for the match against Rajasthan Royals (RR) on May 1, following his recovery from shoulder and elbow injuries.
Starc's Recovery Process
The 36-year-old left-arm pacer has been sidelined since late January due to a demanding schedule during the Ashes series, where he excelled as the Player of the Series, taking 31 wickets at an impressive average of 19.93. Starc bowled over 150 overs in five Tests and participated in five matches for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League (BBL). His last game was against the Perth Scorchers, where he injured his left shoulder and elbow while attempting a catch.
After taking a break in February, he faced delays in his IPL participation due to persistent soreness when he resumed bowling. Initially uncertain about his fitness, Starc publicly addressed the speculation, expressing his frustration. However, he has recently completed a week of pain-free bowling in Sydney and is expected to head to India soon, as reported by ESPN. He will undergo acclimatization and gradually ramp up his training to prepare for matches.
Other Australian Bowlers Returning
If Starc's recovery remains on track, he is likely to contribute to the Delhi Capitals for the remainder of the IPL season, enhancing their pace attack during this critical phase. Additionally, fellow Australian pacer and captain Pat Cummins is set to make his IPL 2026 debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Jaipur. Cummins has been out since December due to a lumbar stress injury, having played only one Test in the Ashes series. Josh Hazlewood has also returned to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after missing several matches early in the season due to injury.
Significance for Cricket Australia
The anticipated returns of Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood are a significant advantage for Cricket Australia, which is carefully managing its fast-bowling lineup. Australia faces a rigorous international schedule, with up to 21 Tests planned between August 2026 and August 2027, followed by the ODI World Cup later that year.
Positive Impact on Delhi Capitals
Starc's return will be a major boost for the Delhi Capitals, who are currently positioned fifth in the points table.
