Mitchell Johnson's Reaction to Australia's WTC Final Defeat
Former Australian cricketer Mitchell Johnson is struggling to come to terms with Australia's defeat against South Africa in the World Test Championship final. He has criticized Josh Hazlewood for prioritizing his IPL commitments with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) over his national team duties.
RCB secured a spot in the finals after defeating Punjab Kings in the Qualifier-1 and subsequently clinched their first IPL title by overcoming the same team in the final. Hazlewood played a pivotal role as a star bowler, returning to India specifically for the playoffs.
The IPL 2025 was temporarily halted amid tensions between India and Pakistan, resuming on May 17. Players from South Africa and Australia faced challenges returning, as they were engaged in the WTC final in England. While Hazlewood and Pat Cummins were part of the WTC squad, they opted to return to India for the remaining IPL matches. In contrast, South African players returned to their national team before the playoffs.
Johnson remarked that Hazlewood has been dealing with fitness issues recently, yet he chose to return to the IPL instead of focusing on the national team. This raises significant questions about the preparations for the WTC final.
In the first innings, Hazlewood bowled 15 overs, claiming only one wicket, while Cummins took six wickets. In South Africa's second innings, Hazlewood managed just one wicket when the team was on the brink of victory, needing only six runs. He conceded 58 runs in 19 overs during that innings.
Additionally, he expressed concerns about the future of Australia's successful bowling quartet, which includes Mitchell Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins, and Nathan Lyon. If senior players only remain until their retirement after the Ashes, it raises the question of whether this is the right mindset. It is crucial to make decisions with the future in mind and show confidence in selecting new players.
