Mirabai Chanu Shines at Glasgow 2026

In Glasgow, Scotland, on July 26, Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu celebrated a remarkable achievement by winning her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. This victory in the women's 48kg weightlifting category marked India's first gold medal of the Glasgow 2026 Games.

Chanu's triumph followed compatriot Rishikanta Singh's silver medal in the men's 60kg event earlier that day. With this latest win, Chanu adds to her previous gold medals from the 2018 and 2022 Commonwealth Games.

Expressing her joy on social media, Chanu highlighted the significance of this accomplishment during her fourth appearance at the Commonwealth Games. She extended her gratitude to her supporters, stating, "I am pleased with my performance and truly humbled to win my third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal at Glasgow. Chanu had previously set a Commonwealth record with an 85 kg lift in the snatch. She began the clean and jerk segment with an unsuccessful attempt at 82 kg but quickly rebounded, successfully lifting 82 kg on her second try and then achieving an impressive 85 kg on her third attempt, setting a new Games and Commonwealth record.

To secure her gold medal, Chanu attempted a lift of 105 kg, which she successfully raised above her head, completing her hat-trick of Commonwealth Games gold medals. This victory marked India's third medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games, following Chanambam Rishikanta Singh's silver and para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar's bronze.

Rishikanta earned his silver medal in the men's 60kg weightlifting event with a total lift of 264 kg (121 kg snatch + 143 kg clean and jerk). He set a new Commonwealth Games snatch record with his 121 kg lift, although Malaysia's Mohamad Aniq Kasdan matched this mark and went on to achieve a Games-record total of 273 kg to win gold. Kenya's Joshua Mboya secured the bronze with a total lift of 260 kg. Rishikanta's final clean and jerk attempt at 151 kg was unsuccessful, ending his quest for gold.
