Minnu Mani's Auction Experience

During the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction held on Thursday, cricket enthusiasts from Kerala eagerly anticipated the name of Minnu Mani, a beloved player from Wayanad. However, when her name was not called in the initial round, spirits were dampened.

For Minnu, who was watching the auction unfold from a hotel room in Delhi, the disappointment was palpable.

She expressed, "I felt a wave of disappointment when I saw that no one bid for me in the first round. Yet, I held onto a sliver of hope for the second round."

That hope soon transformed into an unexpected emotional rollercoaster.

A Surprising Turn of Events

As the auction progressed, the situation became tense. The available funds for teams dwindled, and the likelihood of her being picked seemed slim. Then, in a surprising twist, Delhi Capitals made a bold move that electrified both her and the cricket fans in Kerala.

Minnu recalled, "When Delhi finally selected me during the accelerated auction, I was genuinely shocked. By the final round, the remaining budgets of each team were visible on the screen. Most teams had very little left, except for UP Warriorz and Gujarat Giants."

Delhi had exactly ₹40 lakh remaining, which matched her base price. Minnu thought her chances were over.

She added, "I had little hope left. But when Delhi used their entire budget to acquire me, I was overwhelmed. It felt like they believed in my potential."

Sitting alongside her coach Suman Sharma, she was still processing the moment.

Joining a Star-Studded Team

Delhi Capitals is not just any team; it boasts a roster filled with world-class players. For Minnu, the opportunity to play alongside such talent is both an honor and a learning experience.

She mentioned, "The team includes World Cup stars like Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali Varma. Playing with World Cup champions is a tremendous opportunity for me, and their experience will be invaluable."

The impressive lineup continues with players like Laura Wolvaardt, who led South Africa to the World Cup final, and Marizanne Kapp and Annabel Sutherland, with whom she has previously played. Minnu is excited about the chance to collaborate with them.

Reflections on Kerala's Representation

The opportunities for women’s cricket in Kerala are limited, a reality that was evident during the auction.

Minnu expressed her disappointment that more players from Kerala did not secure contracts but was pleased that Asha Sobhana and Sajana Sajeevan found teams with better deals this year.

She noted, "Last season, they were signed for lower amounts, but this year, they received more favorable contracts. The auction is unpredictable, and luck plays a significant role in a player's selection."

While she feels gratitude for her own success, she also hopes for greater representation from her home state.

Looking Ahead After Missing the World Cup

Minnu was considered for the Women’s ODI World Cup, and she acknowledges this fact.

She stated, "I had aspirations of being part of the World Cup team, but I’m not disheartened by my exclusion. All I can do is continue to work hard, as selection is beyond our control."

With no bitterness, she sets her sights on new goals.

She added, "It’s encouraging to know I was in the running for the team. Next month, I hope to play in the T20 series against Sri Lanka in Thiruvananthapuram, which would be a thrilling experience in my home state."

A Vision for Women's Cricket in Kerala

Minnu believes that Kerala, which has produced many male cricket icons, could benefit from a women’s league.

She expressed, "Just as the Kerala Cricket League was established for men, I hope a women’s league will also be initiated in Kerala soon."

Last year’s exhibition match for women felt like a significant step forward.

She hopes that within the next couple of years, a T20 league for women will be launched in Kerala, especially with Jayesh George as the chairman of the Women’s Premier League, which could open more doors for female cricketers.

Minnu Mani's Inspiring Journey

Minnu Mani’s journey is not one of instant success; it is a testament to her determination and hard work.

Once again, just when it seemed like hope was fading, she fought her way back into the spotlight.

The pride of Kerala has returned to the WPL, and she is eager to demonstrate why Delhi invested in her.
