A Journey from Spain to India

Guwahati, July 17: Michel Zabaco's football career has taken him from the historic streets of Burgos in northern Spain to the scenic hills of Northeast India, where he has become a key figure for NorthEast United FC.

At 36, this Spaniard has embraced multiple roles since joining the Indian Super League team owned by John Abraham in July 2023. As he gears up for his third season with the Highlanders, Zabaco has played a crucial role in the club's evolution, highlighted by their first major trophy win in the Durand Cup last year.

“It wasn’t hard to persuade myself to come to India,” Zabaco shared during a training break in Guwahati. “When head coach Juan Pedro Benali reached out with the offer, I discussed it with my family, and now I realize it was the right choice.”

His composed nature off the pitch reflects his defensive skills. A traditional centre-back, Zabaco is known for his aerial strength, tactical awareness, and calmness under pressure, bringing over 200 matches of experience from Spain's lower leagues, including time with Atletico Madrid’s C and B teams, Almeria, Ponferradina, and his hometown club Burgos CF.

However, his contributions extend beyond the field. During the off-season in Spain, instead of taking a break, Zabaco collaborated with coach Benali to scout new talent, often acting as the club's unofficial ambassador.

“It’s challenging to convince players to relocate to a foreign country, whether it’s India, Thailand, or elsewhere,” he explained. “They often inquire about the food, culture, and language. But it’s becoming easier now as Indian football gains recognition, and clubs provide excellent facilities.”

Zabaco's insights are valued both in the locker room and across Europe. He speaks fondly of the Indian football scene, saying, “The fans here are amazing. Whether at the stadium or in shopping malls, people approach us for autographs and photos. They truly make us feel at home.”

With 42 appearances in the ISL, along with two goals and two assists over two seasons, Zabaco's performance has been consistent. However, it was in 2024 that he truly made his mark by leading the team to victory in the Durand Cup, Asia's oldest club football tournament.

“That victory was significant for us and our supporters,” he remarked. “This year, we aim to achieve even more.”

NorthEast United will kick off their Durand Cup title defense on August 2 against the Malaysian Army Football Team, alongside Rangdajied United and Shillong Lajong in their group. “Playing in Shillong will be beneficial,” Zabaco noted, acknowledging Guwahati's intense humidity.

Off the field, the Spanish defender has adapted well. “My family and kids are enjoying life here—the food, culture, and people. I’ve settled in and am loving it,” he shared.

Regarding Benali, he commented, “He’s an excellent leader—not only tactically but also adept at managing both on-field and off-field challenges with poise and clarity.”

As Zabaco prepares for another season with the Highlanders, he feels a sense of pride—not just for past achievements but for the future ahead. “This is my third season, and everything has been fantastic so far. I’m just thrilled to be part of this journey,” he concluded.
