Michael Vaughan Advocates for Full Overs in Test Matches

Vaughan's Call for Change in Test Cricket
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has called for teams to be mandated to complete all 90 overs during each day of a Test match. In the ongoing Test, India managed to bowl only 83 overs on the first day and just 75 on the second, falling short by nearly 23 overs over the initial two days.
Vaughan expressed that simply imposing fines on teams for not meeting over-rate requirements is ineffective, especially since many players are financially secure and not significantly impacted by such penalties. He questioned why teams consistently struggle to meet the over quota in the early days of a Test yet manage to bowl all 90 overs on the final day.

“Fines don't seem to work. These players are quite wealthy, and I doubt that money will have any real impact on them. This has been an ongoing issue in Test cricket. I understand it's hot and there have been injuries, but by the fifth day, we must complete the 90 overs. I can't comprehend why the pace of the game slows down on the first four days,”

The former cricketer, now a commentator, emphasized that teams should exhibit the same urgency throughout all five days, not just on the last day. He believes that if teams consistently bowl the full quota of overs daily, Test matches would become significantly more engaging and dynamic.
“The game should simply progress by stating, 'on Day 1, we have 90 overs. Therefore, we will bowl 90 overs on Day 2 as well'... You’ll notice on Day 5, when players and umpires are aware that 90 overs must be bowled, they will be more active, resulting in fewer drink breaks and delays. It should be straightforward: bowl the 90 overs. I can assure you that this would enhance the match pace,”
The fourth day of the Test match has been quite eventful. England aimed to set a formidable target for India but faced frequent wickets. Indian bowlers have excelled, applying pressure on the English batsmen throughout the day.
Currently, India holds a strong position, with England at 117 for 4. Joe Root and Ben Stokes remain at the crease, looking to extend their lead as much as possible to stay competitive in the match.
