MG University Triumphs at Inaugural All India University Armwrestling Championship
Historic Armwrestling Championship Concludes in Aligarh
The All India University Armwrestling Championship, hosted by Maharana Pratap University in Aligarh, has successfully wrapped up, with MG University from Kottayam taking home the Overall Team Championship title in the men's division. The University of Calicut, also from Kerala, emerged as the champion in the women's category.
This tournament marked a significant milestone as it was the first time Armwrestling was included in the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), which is expected to greatly enhance the sport's grassroots development throughout India.
In the men's team standings, MG University, Kottayam, showcased exceptional skill and secured the top position, while Mizoram University from Aizawl claimed the Runner-Up spot. Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh University in Aligarh finished as the second runner-up.
On the women's side, the University of Calicut delivered an outstanding performance to clinch the championship title. MG University, Kottayam, was the Runner-Up, and Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh University, Aligarh, took the second runner-up position.
The event saw enthusiastic participation from over 450 students representing 52 universities across the nation, underscoring the increasing interest in Armwrestling among young athletes.
The final day featured notable attendees, including Prof. Naima Khatoon, Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, who served as the Chief Guest. Vijaya Singh, Zila Panchayat Adhyaksh, and Prof. Narendra Bahadur Singh, Vice Chancellor of Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh State University, were present as Guests of Honour.
Following the championship, Parvinn Dabass, Co-Founder of the Pro Panja League, expressed, “This championship provides the essential platform that the sport requires at the grassroots level. Introducing Armwrestling in universities opens doors for countless young athletes who might not have had the chance to compete otherwise. Congratulations to all the winners.”
Preeti Jhangiani, President of the People’s Armwrestling Federation India (PAFI) and Vice President of the Asian Armwrestling Federation (AAF), echoed similar sentiments, stating, “The strong participation from universities across India is incredibly encouraging, and the talent displayed here indicates that India has significant potential in Armwrestling.”
