Mexico City, June 25: With goals from Mateo Chavez, Julian Quinones, and Alvaro Fidalgo, along with a notable appearance by Guillermo Ochoa, Mexico concluded their group-stage matches in the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a commanding 3-0 win over Czechia at the Mexico City Stadium.
Having already secured the top position in Group A and a spot in the Round of 32, Mexico faced a Czechia team that needed a win to keep their knockout stage hopes alive, but the defeat ended their campaign.
This victory marks the first instance where Mexico has won all three group-stage matches in a World Cup, and it is also the first time since 1970 that they have maintained clean sheets in all group games.
Czechia started the match aggressively, with Denis Visinsky creating an early chance that narrowly missed the target in the eighth minute.
However, Mexico soon found their rhythm, with Mateo Chavez opening the scoring by capitalizing on a pass from Raul Jimenez, maneuvering past a Czech defender, and finishing with precision, igniting excitement among the home fans.
Just six minutes later, Mexico doubled their lead when Jorge Sanchez's attempt was saved by Matej Kovar, but a poor clearance allowed Julian Quinones to score easily.
Ten minutes into the second half, Chavez showcased his speed to score again, sending the crowd into a frenzy. Shortly after, Quinones added another goal from close range, making it 2-0.
The atmosphere intensified when legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa entered the match for his 153rd cap, marking his sixth World Cup appearance with 12 minutes remaining.
In stoppage time, Alvaro Fidalgo capped off the night by scoring after Santiago Gimenez's attempt was thwarted, sealing a memorable victory for El Tri.
“The key is to remain calm. Our group embodies that mindset and humility. We are a hardworking team, and we are not content with our achievements so far. We take it one match at a time, focusing on preparing for the next game,” Ochoa stated, as reported by FIFA.
