Messi's Substitution Sparks Controversy in Argentina's Draw Against Colombia

Argentina's Coach Discusses Messi's Late Substitution
In a recent match held at Estadio Monumental, Argentina's head coach Lionel Scaloni disclosed that Lionel Messi requested to be substituted during the closing moments of their gripping 1-1 draw with Colombia.
The match was electrifying, with Luis Diaz showcasing a stunning solo goal that put Colombia ahead in the 24th minute, leaving the home fans in shock while the visiting supporters erupted in celebration.
Argentina faced further challenges when Enzo Fernandes received a red card in the 70th minute for a high challenge on Colombia's Kevin Castano, who required medical attention after being struck in the face.
In a surprising move, Scaloni substituted Messi for Exequiel Palacios with just 12 minutes remaining. Shortly after this change, Argentina equalized with a well-placed shot from Thiago Almada, despite being a man down.
Scaloni explained that it was Messi's own decision to leave the field, expressing satisfaction with how his team performed even without their star player. He stated, “Leo wasn’t going to come off, but he ended up coming off near the end. He told me it was better for him to come off, and so we decided to change him. The good thing we always showed, with 10 men and without Messi, is that we kept looking, not giving up on a ball. That makes us very satisfied,” as reported by a Media House.
Following the draw, Argentina maintained their unbeaten streak and continued to top the CONMEBOL qualification standings with 35 points from 16 matches. Their final qualification matches are scheduled for September against Venezuela and Ecuador. Meanwhile, Brazil has already secured their spot in the World Cup 2026 after defeating Paraguay.
