Mehidy Hasan Miraz Takes Over as Bangladesh's New ODI Captain

In a significant shift for the Bangladesh cricket team, Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been appointed as the new ODI captain, taking over from Najmul Hasan Shanto. This change comes after a disappointing performance in the Champions Trophy, with Miraz set to lead the team in upcoming series against Sri Lanka and India. His previous captaincy experience, although challenging, has led the Bangladesh Cricket Board to trust him with this crucial role. Miraz expresses gratitude for the opportunity and aims to inspire confidence and fearless play within the team.

Bangladesh Cricket Team's Leadership Change

In a notable development for the Bangladesh cricket team, Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been named the new captain for the One Day International (ODI) format. This announcement comes just ahead of the important series against India scheduled for August. Miraz succeeds Najmul Hasan Shanto, who will retain his role as captain for Test matches.

A New Era Following a Disappointing Champions Trophy

Following a lackluster performance in the recent Champions Trophy, the Bangladesh team has decided to make some changes. Miraz, recognized as one of the standout players, will lead the ODI squad. His first assignment as captain will be during the series against Sri Lanka in July, prior to the India matches.

This isn't Miraz's first experience in a leadership role. He previously captained Bangladesh in four ODIs against the West Indies and Afghanistan last year, although the team did not secure any victories in those matches. Nevertheless, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) saw potential in him and has given him another chance.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz expressed his thoughts:

“It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the board. Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer and I am grateful for the confidence the board has shown in me. I have every faith in this team. We have the talent and the belief to play fearless cricket. I want us to perform with confidence, play without inhibition and continue giving our best for the country.”

Previously, Najmul Shanto was appointed as captain across all formats—Tests, ODIs, and T20Is—in February of last year. However, the team's performance has since declined. The BCB is currently undergoing changes and has opted for a split captaincy approach. Miraz will now lead the ODI team, Shanto will remain the Test captain, and Liton Das will take charge of the T20 squad.
