Football Fan Park Opens in Shillong

Shillong (Meghalaya) [India], June 27: The government of Meghalaya has heightened the anticipation for the FIFA World Cup 2026 by launching a dedicated Football Fan Park in Shillong. This venue allows fans to watch matches live on large LED screens at no cost, coinciding with the tournament's thrilling knockout phase.


Located at the SRGT Parking Lot, the Fan Park aims to unite football fans from across the state, where the sport is immensely popular. Supporters can come together to cheer for their favorite teams, enjoying an atmosphere reminiscent of a stadium during the World Cup.


This initiative has been enthusiastically embraced by local football fans, many of whom have described it as a groundbreaking experience for the state. One supporter remarked that the setup was a "fantastic way" to celebrate football, expressing optimism about large turnouts throughout the tournament.


"It's a great experience being here. I believe this is the first time something like this has happened. What a fantastic way to do it! People will truly enjoy watching football. The Fan Park opens as football fever peaks nationwide, with the FIFA World Cup advancing to the round of 32. The knockout stage kicks off on Monday, featuring South Africa against co-hosts Canada, transitioning to a straight elimination format leading up to the final at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.


This expanded 48-team World Cup commenced on June 11, with co-hosts Mexico defeating South Africa 2-0. It includes 12 groups of four teams, with the top two from each group and the eight best third-placed teams moving on to the Round of 32.


Teams that have already secured their spots in the knockout stage include Brazil, Japan, Canada, Germany, France, Spain, Argentina, the Netherlands, Morocco, Belgium, the United States, Mexico, and Egypt, while the remaining qualification spots will be determined through the final group-stage matches over the weekend.
