Harare: Fast bowler Mayank Yadav made a remarkable return to the international stage as India limited Zimbabwe to a mere 125 runs for seven wickets in the opening T20 match of their three-match series on Thursday.
This marked Yadav's first appearance for the national team since October 2024, and he showcased impressive speed right from the start.
He dismissed opener Brian Bennett (0) with a stunning delivery on the very first ball, which caught the edge of the bat after straightening slightly off a hard length.
Although the on-field umpire missed the edge, India successfully reviewed the decision using DRS.
Having undergone surgery last year due to a stress fracture, Yadav consistently bowled at speeds exceeding 145 km/h, targeting the back of a length and pressuring the batsmen with his pace.
His extra speed contributed to his second wicket when Dion Myers (6) mis-timed a pull shot in the fifth over.
Debutant Ashok Sharma, despite conceding a few boundaries in his first over, managed to control the run flow in his subsequent overs.
Unfamiliar with the conditions, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer opted to bowl first after winning the toss.
Zimbabwe faced immediate pressure with Bennett's dismissal on the first ball, and their situation worsened during the powerplay, finishing at 26 for three.
Zimbabwe's captain Sikandar Raza attempted to break the shackles against Shivam Dube but was caught at deep square leg, leaving the team at 32 for four in the eighth over.
Ryan Burl (26 off 35), Wessly Madhevere (38 off 34), and Tadiwanashe Marumani (27 not out off 20) managed to stabilize the innings, helping their side surpass the 120-run mark.
Marumani entertained the crowd with some impressive shots in the cow corner area.
Ravi Bishnoi, who had a tough outing in the UK, finished with commendable figures of 24 runs for one wicket in his four overs.
India is aiming for their first victory under the leadership of Iyer, following a disappointing winless tour in Ireland and England.
