Pathirana's Injury Disrupts KKR's Victory

Matheesha Pathirana's first match for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) was unexpectedly halted due to an injury during the IPL 2026 match against the Gujarat Titans at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on May 16.

Despite this setback, KKR, under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane, secured a crucial 29-run victory over GT, keeping their playoff aspirations alive. They set a formidable target of 247 runs, bolstered by impressive half-centuries from Finn Allen (93), Angkrish Raghuvanshi (82*), and Cameron Green (52*). The team successfully defended this total, limiting the Titans to 218 runs, with notable contributions from Shubman Gill (85), Jos Buttler (57), and Sai Sudharsan (53*).

Sunil Narine was the standout bowler for KKR, achieving figures of 2 wickets for 29 runs in four overs, while Cameron Green (1/25) and Saurabh Dubey (1/23) provided essential support in the final overs.

Pathirana's Brief Appearance

Although KKR celebrated their win, they faced a significant blow as Pathirana's debut ended prematurely. The Sri Lankan pacer, who had missed most of the season due to a calf injury from the T20 World Cup 2026, finally made his appearance in the purple and gold jersey after extensive rehabilitation and receiving a Non-Objection Certificate (NOC) from Sri Lanka Cricket.

Pathirana bowled one complete over, conceding seven runs, including two wides, before discomfort in his hamstring forced him to leave the field after just two balls in his second over. Medical staff attended to him on the pitch, but he was unable to continue.

Fans React to Pathirana's Injury

The KKR franchise, which had eagerly awaited Pathirana's return for 13 matches, now faces uncertainty regarding the severity of his injury. It appears that the calf issue from the T20 World Cup may have re-emerged or led to a new hamstring strain, raising concerns about their substantial investment of INR 14 crore for a player who delivered only eight balls.

Fans took to social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to express their frustration over Pathirana's fitness issues, labeling him as 'unreliable' and calculating that his performance cost KKR approximately INR 2.25 crore per ball bowled. Many suggested that the franchise should consider investing in younger, healthier players or scouting emerging talent from associate nations instead of relying on a player with ongoing injury problems.

Pathirana's IPL Journey

Before joining KKR, Matheesha Pathirana played four seasons with the Chennai Super Kings from 2022 to 2025, where he was instrumental in their death-overs bowling and contributed significantly to their 2023 championship win under MS Dhoni.

Throughout his IPL career, Pathirana has taken 47 wickets, including a four-wicket haul, with an average of 21.80 and an economy rate of 8.66 across 33 matches.
