Matheesha Pathirana's IPL 2026 Participation in Doubt Due to Injury
Concerns Surrounding Pathirana's Fitness
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are currently facing uncertainty regarding the participation of Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. This follows an injury he sustained during the T20 World Cup 2026.
Pathirana, who was signed by KKR for a staggering INR 18 crore after his tenure with Chennai Super Kings, suffered a calf muscle injury in a match against Australia earlier this year, which led to his exit from the tournament. Since then, the 23-year-old has been sidelined from cricket, leaving KKR uncertain about his availability for the initial matches of IPL 2026.
KKR's Preparations Amid Uncertainty
As the IPL 2026 season approaches, KKR is still waiting for updates on Pathirana's condition. His injury has created a cloud of uncertainty over the franchise, which is eager to know when he can rejoin the team.
Reports indicate that there is no definitive information regarding Pathirana's availability, as his travel arrangements are frequently altered due to ongoing fitness issues. This situation complicates KKR's strategy for their pace attack ahead of their opening match against the Mumbai Indians on March 29.
Injury Complications for KKR
KKR's pace lineup is already under strain, with key bowler Harshit Rana also unavailable due to a knee injury. This situation intensifies the pressure on the team to find a balance between experience and strength for the upcoming matches.
Additionally, KKR had to release Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman due to backlash regarding his acquisition amid rising tensions between India and Bangladesh, following directives from the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
NOC Issues for Pathirana
Amid the ongoing uncertainty, reports suggest that Sri Lanka Cricket has not issued a non-objection certificate (NOC) for Matheesha Pathirana, as he has not passed the required fitness tests to join the KKR squad.
Social media rumors indicate that Pathirana has yet to apply for the NOC, which is contingent upon him completing the necessary fitness evaluations. Although he has begun bowling in the nets, he has not yet reached the intensity required for full fitness.
A source close to Pathirana remains optimistic about his recovery, believing he will achieve full fitness soon, which would enable him to secure the NOC in time for IPL 2026. However, KKR remains in a state of uncertainty, unable to finalize their pace attack or playing XI until Pathirana's fitness is confirmed.
