She reassured viewers, stating, “If you’ve been eager to learn topspin but find it difficult, remember that while it’s tough, it’s definitely achievable.”


Improta elaborated on the significance of topspin, explaining, “Essentially, topspin allows you to strike the ball with force while ensuring it stays within the court boundaries.” She further delved into the mechanics of the shot, noting, “The essence of topspin involves spinning the ball forward, which results in an upward and then downward path. The spin effectively pulls the ball down, showcasing the physics at play in your shots.” She pointed out that without topspin, players often face a dilemma between power and control. “Without it, you usually have to sacrifice one for the other, but topspin offers the advantage of both.”


Step-by-Step Guide to Mastering Topspin

Improta emphasized the importance of starting with the basics. “We need to position ourselves behind the ball, focus on hitting from underneath, and brush upwards to create that spin,” she advised. Regarding grip, she suggested, “It’s easier to generate topspin if your grip is slightly right of center, akin to a ‘hammer grip’ or ‘handshake’ style.”


For beginners, she proposed a straightforward self-feed drill. “I’ll drop the ball and consciously ensure my paddle tip is down, with my palm facing the ground,” she explained, highlighting the need for exaggeration in the initial stages. “I aim to move from 6 to 12, striking the bottom of the ball to generate forward spin.”


As players advance, she recommended practicing partner toss drills to enhance rhythm and timing. “Focus on a low-to-high motion, with your palm directed downwards, brushing up along the right side of the ball,” Improta demonstrated.
