Mason Mount Discusses England Return with Coach Tuchel Amid Competition
Mount Reflects on His England Future
New Delhi, July 29: Mason Mount, the Manchester United midfielder, shared insights about his recent conversation with England's head coach Thomas Tuchel regarding his potential return to the national team, emphasizing that there are "no guarantees" for his selection.
During their time at Chelsea, Mount was a key player under Tuchel. The duo celebrated a significant achievement in 2021 when Chelsea triumphed over Manchester City to secure the UEFA Champions League title. Mount discussed his recent interaction with Tuchel and acknowledged the fierce competition for spots on the England squad.
"He reached out to me, mentioning that he was in touch with many players—perhaps around 40 or 50. It was great to reconnect and chat with him. I had a substantial playing time under his management, and winning the Champions League was a highlight," Mount stated, as reported by a sports outlet.
He further noted, "However, the situation with England is quite different now; the competition for places is intense, and the selection pool is broader than in club football. So, I don't think it directly correlates to club performance."
Mount last represented England during the World Cup quarter-final against France in December 2022, where he played a pivotal role in earning a penalty that Harry Kane unfortunately missed. Despite being absent from the national team for over two years, Mount remains hopeful but realistic about his chances of a call-up, given his history with Tuchel.
"He mentioned that there are no guarantees, even with our past together. This motivates me to strive harder for a spot in the squad. It was refreshing to speak with him; he seemed enthusiastic and full of energy for his new role," he added.
Mount made the switch to Manchester United from Chelsea in 2023, but his time at Old Trafford has been marred by injuries. As the 2026 World Cup approaches, he is eager to compete for a place in the tournament.
"As a player, representing your country is a tremendous honor. Every chance to wear that jersey is special. With 36 caps for England, I understand the significance of playing for my nation. I would love to seize that opportunity again, but my primary focus is on club football right now. I will see how things unfold by the end of the season," he concluded.
