Kostyuk's Historic Victory

Madrid [Spain], May 2: Marta Kostyuk has achieved the most significant milestone in her career by winning the Madrid Open 2026. The 23-year-old Ukrainian triumphed over world No. 8 Mirra Andreeva with a score of 6-3, 7-5 in the women's singles final held on Saturday, marking her 11th consecutive win on clay courts.

Following this victory, Kostyuk is poised to ascend from her current ranking of No. 23 to a personal best of No. 15 in the upcoming WTA rankings. This WTA 1000 title is her third, placing her among the top contenders for the French Open, which is set to commence on May 24 in Paris.

Before her successful run in 2026, Kostyuk had a record of just 5-7 in her previous appearances in the Spanish capital.

"Standing here feels surreal. It has taken me years to reach this level. The key word for me is 'consistency.' I’ve been showing up every day, and I’m proud of my progress and my team," Kostyuk expressed, as reported by a sports news outlet.

With a smile during the trophy presentation, she added, "I never imagined I would win this title here; it wasn't my favorite tournament at all."

This victory marks Kostyuk's 14th win against a top-10 player and concludes an impressive two weeks in Madrid. Earlier, she had defeated world No. 5 Jessica Pegula in the third round and only lost one set throughout the tournament, which occurred against Anastasia Potapova in the semifinals.

Kostyuk's triumph in Spain, where she entered as the No. 26 seed, included victories over notable players like Jessica Pegula, Linda Noskova, and Andreeva, securing her back-to-back titles after her recent win in Rouen.
