The pickleball scene in the Philippines is poised for significant transformation as boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has announced the establishment of the Maharlika Pilipinas Pickleball Tour (MPPT). This new professional league aims to accelerate the sport's growth throughout the Southeast Asian nation. Pacquiao's foray into pickleball is reminiscent of his earlier involvement with the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), which provided opportunities for numerous players who found it challenging to break into the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
Format of the Tournament
Sanctioned by the Games and Amusements Board, the MPPT will feature teams from Metro Manila, Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao. Currently, three teams have confirmed their participation, with MPPT CEO Joe Ramos indicating that the full roster of eight franchises will be finalized soon. The inaugural season will kick off with a five-leg invitational tournament, where each franchise will include three male and three female players competing in men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles events. The competition will adopt a round-robin format on Saturdays, followed by knockout rounds on Sundays, including quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals. Commissioner Mark K. Espinosa stated, “This format showcases the talent depth in Philippine pickleball while fostering a competitive team atmosphere.”

“My mission has always been to promote sports and provide our athletes with a platform to display their skills and bring pride to their communities,” Pacquiao expressed, as reported by Asian Pickleball News. He acknowledged that while pickleball is relatively new in the Philippines, it is an exciting and accessible sport.
This initiative comes at a time when pickleball is rapidly gaining traction in the Philippines. Once considered merely a recreational activity, it has quickly become one of the country's fastest-growing sports.
