Maninder Singh Critiques India's Loss to England in T20I Match
Disappointment After India's Defeat
Former Indian cricketer Maninder Singh expressed his dissatisfaction following India's 4-wicket defeat to England in the second T20I match. He noted that India was in a commanding position until the 16th over, but critical mistakes led to their downfall.
Maninder Singh Critiques 'Criminal' Bowling
In an interview, Maninder specifically pointed out the disastrous 17th over bowled by Ravi Bishnoi, who allowed 29 runs to score. He emphasized the necessity of maintaining discipline in T20 bowling, stating, "It was very disappointing, as I believed the game was in India's favor until the 16th over. However, Bishnoi's performance in the 17th over, including no-balls, was unacceptable. The coaching staff must assist him in improving his game."
He further lamented the loss, labeling bowling no-balls in T20 matches as a significant error. "When bowlers practice, the bowling coach should focus on their positioning to prevent no-balls during matches. In modern cricket, a no-ball is a serious mistake. We lost due to the 29 runs conceded by Bishnoi in that over," he added.
Backing New Captain Shreyas Iyer
Maninder Singh also voiced his support for the newly appointed T20I captain, Shreyas Iyer. He acknowledged the limited preparation time compared to his role with the Punjab Kings in the IPL and expressed confidence in Iyer's ability to secure his first win as captain soon. "His first victory will come. As the captain of PBKS, he understands his players well due to their extensive training camps before the IPL. Although he hasn't had that luxury here, he is a thoughtful captain who knows how to inspire his team. Once he has a squad he prefers, the results will improve," he remarked.
Concerns Regarding Batting Performance
Maninder shared his concerns about the batting lineup, particularly regarding debutant Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and the overall batting struggles observed during the UK tour. He highlighted issues with Tilak Varma's strike rate, Sanju Samson's form, and Ishan Kishan's slower-than-usual innings of 49 runs off 40 balls. He pointed out the significant differences between English and Indian playing conditions, suggesting that players needed more time to adjust after the high-scoring IPL season.
"I am somewhat worried about India's batting issues due to the contrasting conditions," he stated. "The playing conditions in England are vastly different from those in India." He elaborated on the technical challenges players face, explaining, "In the IPL, pitches are conducive to batting, allowing for easier shot-making. However, in England, conditions can be unpredictable, even during summer. The moisture in the air affects the ball's behavior. In India, pitches offer a different type of bounce. We saw this when Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma struggled with their shots early on due to the bounce."
"Players need time to adapt," he continued. "If they had arrived earlier for practice matches, they would have adjusted more swiftly. Transitioning from Indian pitches to these conditions is not instantaneous. These minor issues will continue to challenge Indian batters until they acclimatize."
