Manav Shah's Journey to the U.S. Open: A Dream Realized
A Dream Come True for Manav Shah
Indian-American golfer Manav Shah expressed immense joy upon qualifying for the U.S. Open 2026, calling it a 'dream come true.' He made history as the first player from the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) to earn a spot in a Major championship since the league's launch last year. The 34-year-old is set to compete at the renowned Shinnecock Hills Golf Club starting June 18, marking his debut in a Major event. Shah reflected on his emotional journey, stating, 'It’s been a roller coaster ride. I was overwhelmed when I confirmed my qualification. The support I've received has been heartwarming, marking the start of a dream realized.'
A Journey Rooted in Family and Discipline
Shah, born to Indian parents and raised in Bakersfield, California, began his golf journey at six years old. What began as a bonding activity with his father evolved into a significant aspect of his life. 'My dad fell in love with golf after moving from India. We would often play together, and it provided me a way to stay out of trouble in a challenging neighborhood,' Shah shared. He emphasized the life lessons he learned through golf, including honesty, discipline, and hard work, feeling fortunate to have started playing at such a young age.
Professional Career and Key Victories
Shah, who played collegiate golf at UCLA and graduated with a Political Science degree in 2015, has spent the last decade competing globally as a professional golfer. He has secured eight professional titles, with a significant victory at the 2022 Quito Open on the PGA Tour Latinoamerica, making him the second Indian-American golfer to win a PGA Tour-sanctioned event after Arjun Atwal. 'Winning a PGA Tour event carries special significance. That victory was a stepping stone for my participation in the Korn Ferry Tour the following year,' he noted.
Preparing for the Big Stage
As he gears up for this pivotal event, Shah plans to visit Shinnecock Hills ahead of the tournament to acclimate to the challenging course conditions. 'I'm getting back into the right mindset for the event. I’ll be visiting Shinnecock next weekend to play a couple of rounds,' he explained. 'This will give me a solid understanding of the course, and I’ll have two weeks to refine my game before my first Major.' Shah regards the U.S. Open as particularly significant among golf's Majors due to its open qualifying format and intense competition.
Strengthening Ties with Indian Golf
Through the IGPL and the Asian Tour, Shah has reinforced his connection with Indian golf. Earlier this year, he participated in the IGPL Invitational in Chandigarh, finishing tied for third with Indian golfer Sachin Baisoya. Reflecting on his experiences in India, Shah noted that playing there has helped him reconnect with his cultural heritage. 'I remain deeply connected to my culture and roots in India. After my first experience at DLF as part of the Asian Tour, I knew I wanted to play golf in India more regularly,' he stated. He also praised the growth of Indian golf and the initiatives aimed at developing young talent, saying, 'The IGPL is doing a commendable job in building golf courses and training facilities for aspiring young players in India.'
