Shocking Results on Day Two

In a surprising turn of events at the Panas Kuala Lumpur Open, which is the second event of the PPA Tour Asia this season, three of the top four seeds faced elimination on the tournament's second day. The standout upset came from Vietnam's Nguyen Hung Anh, who triumphed over Tama Shimabukuro, the highly regarded 15-year-old from Japan. After winning three qualifying matches, Hung Anh delivered a remarkable performance, defeating the third seed with scores of 11-7, 5-11, 11-9. This loss abruptly ended Shimabukuro's aspirations for a strong showing in Asia, especially after his recent success at the Veolia Atlanta Pickleball Championships in the United States.

Local Hero Shines

Malaysian player Jimmy Liong captivated the home crowd by eliminating fourth seed Kenta Miyoshi with a scoreline of 11-6, 4-11, 11-4. Each point Liong secured seemed to elevate the excitement in the venue. Having narrowly missed a podium finish at last season’s Panas Malaysia Open, Liong appeared motivated by past memories and the support of the crowd, keeping his dreams alive in this tournament.

In another surprising result, second seed Jack Wong Hong-Kit was defeated by Japan's Nasa Hatakeyama. The qualifier, who had impressed fans by winning all his previous matches without dropping a game, maintained his momentum despite losing the first game. He rallied back to win 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, as Wong struggled to find his rhythm, allowing Hatakeyama to control the match.

Despite the downfall of several seeded players, top seed Hien Truong advanced confidently by defeating Marco Leung in straight games (11-3, 11-4), keeping his pursuit of a first singles gold medal on track.

For Shimabukuro, the day was not solely filled with disappointment. He rebounded in the doubles events, teaming up with India's Armaan Bhatia to secure an easy victory over Maleganeas and Chung in the Round of 16, winning 11-5, 11-5. In mixed doubles, Shimabukuro and Alix Truong faced an early setback, losing the first game 0-11 but made a remarkable comeback to win 0-11, 11-6, 11-9.

Emotional Moments in Women's Singles

One of the most thrilling matches of the day occurred in the women’s singles, where 15-year-old Kei Sawaki nearly pulled off a stunning upset against top seed and World No. 7 Chao Yi Wang. After a comeback victory over Pei-Yu Lai, Sawaki faced Wang and took the first game 11-5. However, Wang fought back to claim the second game 11-6. In a nail-biting final game, Sawaki pushed Wang to the limit before ultimately losing 9-11, just two points shy of a monumental upset.

Despite the loss, Sawaki's journey continues as she partnered with Xiao Yi Wang-Beckvall in the women’s doubles, defeating Ho Tam and former Asia silver medallist Sarah Burr 11-5, 9-11, 11-6, ensuring her remarkable run in Kuala Lumpur persists.
