Excitement Surrounds Ahmedabad's Commonwealth Games Hosting

Charkhi Dadri (Haryana) [India], November 28: Mahavir Phogat, a recipient of the Dronacharya Award, has expressed his delight following Ahmedabad's selection as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.

In a conversation with a news outlet, Phogat encouraged Indian coaches to start preparing their athletes immediately, emphasizing the need for dedicated effort ahead of the Games.

Phogat highlighted India's impressive medal tally in past Commonwealth Games, noting achievements of 101 medals in 2010, 64 in 2014, 66 in 2018, and 61 in 2022.

He remarked, “It’s a moment of immense joy that India has secured the hosting rights for the Commonwealth Games after two decades. In 2010, we achieved 101 medals, including 38 golds. In 2014, we earned 64 medals, followed by 66 in 2018 and 61 in 2022. I am optimistic that our athletes will break records in 2030.”

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) confirmed on Wednesday that Ahmedabad, Gujarat, will officially host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The IOA stated, “Amdavad, India (also known as Ahmedabad) has been ratified as the host for the Centenary Commonwealth Games in 2030, marking a significant milestone for the Commonwealth Sports Movement.”

Wrestling coach Manoj Dhankar also shared his pride in India hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030, expressing high expectations for wrestling and shooting events.

“We are thrilled that India will host the Commonwealth Games in 2030. Competing at home allows us to benefit from local support. In the last Commonwealth Games held in Delhi in 2010, we secured second place overall. I have great hopes for wrestling and shooting, as this is a golden opportunity for our athletes,” Dhankar stated.

India's proposal for the 2030 Games, centered in Ahmedabad, aims to build on the groundwork established by Glasgow 2026, allowing India to celebrate the centenary in a grand manner.

The inaugural Commonwealth Games took place in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada. Australia led the medal tally at the most recent Games held in Birmingham, England, in 2022, followed by England, Canada, India, and New Zealand.
