Spain's Coach Backs Young Star Ahead of Crucial Match

In Texas, on July 14, Spain's head coach Luis de la Fuente expressed confidence in young talent Lamine Yamal, suggesting that the forward is yet to showcase his true potential at the FIFA World Cup 2026. He believes Yamal will shine in the upcoming semi-final against France or, if Spain advances, in the final.

Yamal, who turned 19 just before the highly anticipated match at Dallas Stadium, has been encouraged by De la Fuente to embrace the moment without feeling overwhelmed by expectations.

"I've advised him to enjoy the experience. I am confident that Lamine's standout World Cup performance is still ahead of him. I hope it happens tomorrow, or in the final if we make it there," De la Fuente shared with reporters.

The young player entered the tournament after recovering from a hamstring injury sustained while playing for Barcelona in late April. He has gradually regained his form, scoring once but yet to provide an assist as Spain reached the semi-finals.

Spain is on a quest for their first World Cup final appearance since their triumph in 2010, while France aims for a third consecutive final after winning in 2018 and finishing as runners-up in 2022.

Reflecting on last year's UEFA Nations League semi-final, where Spain triumphed over France 5-4, De la Fuente noted that both teams have evolved and learned from that match.

"We gained valuable insights from those encounters, and so did they. We will aim to replicate the scenarios that worked in our favor," he stated.

The coach characterized the semi-final as a clash of differing football philosophies and acknowledged the formidable threat posed by France's attacking lineup, which includes stars like Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Michael Olise.

"We have conducted a thorough analysis of their team. They possess exceptional talent, but so do we. The key lies in imposing our style while neutralizing theirs. In football, the more balanced side often comes out on top, though it’s not a guarantee," he added.

France has had a perfect knockout stage, defeating Sweden, Paraguay, and Morocco without conceding a single goal. Coach Didier Deschamps is set to break the record for the most FIFA World Cup matches managed, reaching 26.

Despite Deschamps labeling Spain as favorites, De la Fuente dismissed such notions as irrelevant.

"Being called favorites means nothing. Both teams are strong, just like the other semi-final. I don’t see the point in such labels, as they hold no significance," he remarked.

Spain bounced back from an initial goalless draw against Cape Verde to top Group H, subsequently eliminating Austria, Portugal, and Belgium, with Mikel Merino scoring crucial late goals in the knockout rounds. La Roja has gone 36 matches without a defeat in regulation time since March 2024 and could match Italy's all-time record of 37 if they avoid losing to France.

As Spain stands on the brink of returning to the World Cup final after 16 years, De la Fuente urged his players to seize this rare opportunity.

"I remind the players to enjoy this moment; we are in a situation that may never arise again. We must be ourselves and remain cautious of the opposition's strengths. We need to believe in our desire to advance. We will give everything to reach the final," he concluded.
