Glasgow, July 24: India has kicked off its medal count at the Commonwealth Games 2026 (CWG) ahead of the official opening ceremony, thanks to boxer Lovlina Borgohain, who has advanced directly to the semifinals after receiving a bye.
The bronze medalist from the Tokyo Olympics, Lovlina Borgohain, has secured her place in the women’s 75kg semifinals without having to compete in the earlier rounds. With only five participants in her category, three, including Lovlina, have moved directly to the semifinals, while the remaining two will face off in a quarterfinal match.
According to the regulations of Commonwealth Games boxing, all semifinal losers are awarded bronze medals, ensuring that Lovlina will leave Glasgow with at least a bronze before her first match.
Lovlina is set to commence her campaign on July 31 against Taafaki in the semifinals, with a chance to compete for gold. A victory would secure her place in the final and guarantee at least a silver medal, while a defeat would still mean she walks away with a bronze.
This will mark her first podium finish at the Commonwealth Games. In her previous appearances, she was eliminated in the quarter-finals at Gold Coast 2018 by the eventual champion Sandy Ryan and lost her opening match at Birmingham 2022, competing in the 69kg category in both instances.
This medal signifies that Lovlina has now earned medals at every major multi-sport event she is eligible for, including the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games.
Lovlina has established herself as a prominent figure in Indian sports, showcasing her talent across various competitions. Her bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics was a proud moment for her and the nation. Her transition from kickboxing to boxing has been intentional and impactful.
As an inspiration to many aspiring athletes in India, she clinched a gold medal at the 2023 World Championship and also secured a silver medal at the 2023 Asian Games held in Hangzhou, China. This will be her first medal at the Commonwealth Games.
