Guwahati, Sept 30: Lovlina Borgohain from Assam is just one victory away from clinching a gold medal at the Asian Games after her narrow 3-2 win over Kazakhstan's Natalya Bogdanova in the women's 75kg semifinal on Wednesday.
This triumph has propelled Lovlina into the finals, making her the first Indian female boxer to reach consecutive finals at the Asian Games, guaranteeing her at least a silver medal.
The semifinal match commenced with both fighters adopting a cautious approach. Bogdanova gradually ramped up the pressure, while Lovlina focused on countering rather than engaging in extended exchanges.
The first round saw Bogdanova narrowly take the lead with a 3-2 score from the judges.
In the second round, Lovlina made a strong comeback, starting with a precise left hook and becoming more aggressive, landing effective combinations as the round progressed. All five judges awarded her the round, giving her a 5-0 lead.
As they entered the final round tied, Bogdanova pushed forward looking for a decisive blow. A left hook from her tested Lovlina, but the Indian boxer countered effectively and maintained her composure under pressure.
Lovlina skillfully avoided unnecessary exchanges, choosing her moments wisely and limiting Bogdanova's clean hits. Despite Bogdanova's relentless efforts until the final bell, Lovlina secured another 3-2 victory.
The judges' scorecards reflected a close contest with scores of 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 28-29, and 28-29 in favor of Lovlina.
This victory sparked celebrations in Lovlina's hometown of Sarupathar, where her parents proudly followed her journey.
“We are extremely happy. She aims to upgrade her medal from silver to gold. As her parents, we support her in every step. We hope she fulfills her dream of bringing home a gold medal from the Asian Games,” expressed her father, Tiken Borgohain.
Having previously secured a silver medal at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, Lovlina now has a chance to surpass that achievement in Aichi-Nagoya.
However, for her parents, the semifinal was filled with anxiety. Tiken mentioned they were unable to watch the match live.
“There are just two of us at home, and we rarely get the chance to see her compete. We are hopeful she brings home the gold and realizes her dream,” he added.
The Indian boxing team has already exceeded its medal count from the last edition, where they secured one silver and three bronze medals. So far, India has won six medals in Aichi-Nagoya.
Alongside Lovlina, Parveen Hooda in the 65kg category and Ankush Panghal in the 80kg category are also set to compete for gold on Friday.
Narender Berwal in the super-heavyweight category, along with Priya and Kapil, have concluded their events with bronze medals.
