Lovepreet Singh's Remarkable Achievement
Lovepreet Singh from Bal Sachandar village in Amritsar has secured a silver medal in the men's +110 kg weightlifting category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. He achieved a total lift of 388 kg, comprising 176 kg in the snatch and 212 kg in the clean and jerk. This silver medal marks a significant improvement from his bronze medal win at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
A Journey of Hard Work and Dedication

Lovepreet's background is rooted in hard work, as his family relied on labor for their livelihood. His father, Kirpal Singh, recalls how Lovepreet would assist his grandfather and uncle in selling vegetables at the market before heading to training. This dedication began when Lovepreet took up weightlifting in Class VIII, inspired by local athletes.
The pivotal moment in his journey occurred when a fellow villager won a silver medal at the state level, igniting a desire in Lovepreet to excel in sports. His father, a tailor, shared, "The entire village celebrated that achievement. Seeing the joy it brought, we wanted our son to take up sports and build a better future. Lovepreet was equally motivated."
Lovepreet's perseverance paid off when he secured his first state-level medal in Class IX, boosting his confidence to pursue weightlifting seriously. His training took place at a college ground far from home, requiring daily bicycle rides to the bus stop, followed by an auto-rickshaw ride to the training facility.
Reflecting on his son's success, an emotional Kirpal expressed, "After the bronze medal earlier and now the silver, I cannot express what I am feeling. It is all because of the Almighty that we have lived to see these happy days. Otherwise, we didn’t have much."
