Glasgow, July 31: In a thrilling display of strength, India's Lovepreet Singh narrowly missed out on the gold medal, finishing with a silver in the men's +110kg weightlifting category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held on Thursday.
Lovepreet achieved a total lift of 388kg, just shy of New Zealand's David Liti, who secured the gold with a lift of 389kg. England's Andrew Griffiths rounded out the podium with a total of 356kg.
The Indian athlete started strong in the snatch, successfully lifting 176kg, keeping him in the race for the top position. In the clean and jerk segment, he cleared 205kg and 212kg before attempting a challenging 217kg on his final lift. Although he was unable to complete this last attempt, his total of 388kg was sufficient for the silver medal.
David Liti, who lifted 166kg in the snatch, made a significant clean and jerk lift of 223kg, allowing him to surpass Lovepreet by the narrowest of margins to claim the Commonwealth title.
Despite the disappointment of missing gold by a mere kilogram, Lovepreet's performance contributed to India's medal tally in Glasgow, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure. His silver medal reflects his consistent efforts on the international stage, pushing the eventual champion until the very end.
This medal further enhances India's strong showing in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games, where the nation's lifters have once again proven to be among the best.
Born on September 6, 1997, in Bal Sachandar village, Amritsar, Punjab, Lovepreet hails from a modest background. Motivated by local weightlifters, he began his weightlifting journey in 2010 at the age of 13, training under local coaches. Despite facing financial challenges, his dedication and disciplined training allowed him to advance through both junior and senior levels.
Lovepreet represented Punjab in national events before joining the Sports Authority of India (SAI) National Camp at NS NIS Patiala in 2017. Initially competing in the 105 kg category, he earned medals at the Junior Commonwealth and Asian Junior Championships. Following the introduction of new IWF weight categories, he transitioned to the 109 kg category, where he won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships.
