Local Weightlifter Kritika Faces Provisional Suspension for Doping Violation
Provisional Suspension of Weightlifter Kritika
In a significant turn of events, Kritika, a celebrated weightlifter from the area, has been provisionally suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) due to the use of a banned substance. NADA has released a comprehensive list of 79 athletes facing provisional suspensions for allegedly utilizing performance-enhancing drugs.
This incident marks a notable first for the city, as it involves a prominent female weightlifter being suspended under Articles 2.1 and 2.2, which pertain to the nature of anti-doping rule violations, for reportedly taking Clomifene, a prohibited substance. Although local association representatives assert that she is registered with a neighboring state, Kritika recently achieved a gold medal while representing Panjab University at the North Zone Inter University Meet, along with a silver at the All India Meet and another silver at the Asmita League, organized by the Chandigarh association. She is currently a student at a local college. Kritika stated, “During the championship, I was dealing with Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD) and took the medication. I was unaware of the banned substance's presence, and this news is shocking to me.”
According to Article 2.1 of NADA, the detection of a prohibited substance or its metabolites in an athlete's sample indicates a violation, emphasizing the athlete's responsibility to ensure that no banned substances enter their system. It is not required to prove intent, fault, negligence, or knowledge on the athlete's part to establish a doping rule violation under Article 2.1. However, exceptions may exist based on the Prohibited List, International Standards, or Technical Documents that outline specific criteria for reporting or evaluating certain banned substances. Clomifene is known to function as a Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator (SERM) and is often misused as an anabolic steroid. In a previous case, NADA imposed a two-year ban on athlete Summy Kaliraman after she tested positive for Clomifene. Furthermore, according to NADA's rulings, support staff associated with a suspended athlete may also face bans.
