Local Boxers Shine on National and International Stages

Outstanding Achievements of Navroop Singh and Bhupinder Singh

Boxers Navroop Singh and Bhupinder Singh are making waves in the boxing world, bringing recognition to their hometown through their remarkable performances at both national and international levels.

In a recent match, Navroop Singh triumphed over Cameroon’s Jean Junior Messi Elime in a professional boxing contest. Messi, who fights in the welterweight category, boasts an impressive record of eight wins against two losses, with five of those victories coming by way of knockout.

Navroop remains undefeated in his three professional bouts, having previously secured wins in competitions held in Amritsar and Hyderabad.

Currently enrolled in a Physical Education degree program at Guru Nanak Dev University, Navroop is gearing up for his upcoming matches. He completed his studies at Khalsa College in March and has been dedicated to boxing since he was in Class VI, having attended Khalsa College Senior Secondary School from Class VI to XII.

Hailing from Ghanupur Kale village, Navroop comes from a modest background, with his father working as a laborer in Dubai to support the family. In addition to his professional career, Navroop also participates in amateur boxing, which is the format used in prestigious events like the Commonwealth Games and the Olympics.

Meanwhile, Bhupinder Singh, a final-year student at Khalsa College, has been training in boxing since Class VII. He is nearing the completion of his recruitment process for the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), a Central Armed Police Force.

Once finalized, he will become the 139th boxer from the Khalsa College Boxing Centre to secure a government position.

Bhupinder also attended Khalsa College Senior Secondary School from Class VII to XII and joined the college boxing center as soon as he enrolled in the undergraduate program.

Earlier this year, he earned a bronze medal for the Punjab men’s team in the 60-kg category at the Senior National Boxing Championship held in Noida in January.

Additionally, Bhupinder has claimed medals at the All India Inter-University Championship in 2023 and the Khelo India University Games in 2024, and he has represented India as part of the senior national boxing team.

The achievements of these two athletes have been celebrated by Khalsa College officials, including Governing Council honorary secretary Rajinder Mohan Chhina, Principal Dr. Atam Singh Randhawa, and Dean and Head of Sports Dr. Daljit Singh, who commended them for their contributions to the institution's reputation.

Principal Sharanjit Singh Bhangu and Sports Head Rankirat Singh Sandhu also praised boxing coach Baljinder Singh for his role in nurturing talented boxers and achieving consistent success.

Coach Baljinder Singh expressed his pride in the accomplishments of his trainees, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring that each student surpasses his own achievements.

As an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with Punjab Police, Baljinder offers free boxing coaching to aspiring athletes. He began his coaching career in 1999 and was appointed as a boxing coach by the former Punjab Sports Director, Pargat Singh, during the 2004-05 period.

Before Bhupinder's anticipated recruitment, 138 boxers from the center had already secured positions in various government sectors. Over the last two decades, the Khalsa College Boxing Centre has produced over 300 national-level boxers and seven international-level boxers.
