Liverpool Honors Diogo Jota as They Prepare for Premier League Title Defense
Liverpool's Tribute to Diogo Jota
As Liverpool prepares to defend their Premier League title for the 2025/26 season, former player Stephen Warnock praised the club for retiring the jersey number 20 in memory of the late striker Diogo Jota. Warnock also recognized Mohamed Salah as one of the world's top players.
The Reds will kick off their title defense at Anfield against Bournemouth starting August 16. This moment will be bittersweet for both players and fans, as they will miss Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident at the young age of 28 in July.
Reports indicate that Jota was traveling with his brother at the time of the accident. He joined Liverpool in September 2020 and was part of the squad that clinched the Premier League title in the 2024-25 season. Jota also played in the 2021/22 Champions League final, where Liverpool fell to Real Madrid 1-0, coming on as a substitute. Last season, he participated in 26 matches and netted six goals.
During a segment on JioHotstar titled 'Preview of the Season 2025-26', Warnock reflected on Jota's infectious smile and passion for the game. He stated, 'He truly enjoyed every moment on the pitch and never took his football for granted, especially at Liverpool. Jota recognized the challenges he overcame to reach the top and appreciated his career, which was evident in every match he played.'
Warnock highlighted that the 'Forever 20' will be featured on Liverpool's jerseys, marking a significant legacy. He commended the club's decision as a globally recognized gesture of respect.
On the topic of Salah, who joined Liverpool in 2017 and has since won multiple titles including two Premier Leagues and a UEFA Champions League, Warnock noted that questions may arise regarding Salah's performance at 33 years old and whether he still possesses the 'hunger and desire' to succeed.
Warnock expressed confidence in Salah's continued excellence, stating, 'You can see he still has that hunger and desire, which is what makes him elite. Regardless of his wealth or status, it’s about performing consistently. I believe he will return to scoring hat-tricks soon.'
