Support for Gambhir's Return

Lalit Modi, the former chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has expressed his endorsement for Gautam Gambhir, urging the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to consider reinstating him in a long-term role. In response to a comment on X, which claimed that KKR lacks direction without Gambhir, Modi concurred and emphasized the former captain's importance to the team, suggesting strategies to ensure his return.

Modi's Suggestions for KKR

"I completely agree. Gautam Gambhir was undoubtedly the best fit for KKR. The management must do everything possible to bring him back. They should incentivize him, similar to how Shane Warne had equity options. They need to secure him for the long term—offer him stock options. I hope they are wise enough to consider this. He doesn't count against the Player Auction budget; they should make him the face of the team," Modi stated on X.

Lessons from Shane Warne

Modi referenced the late Shane Warne, who had an equity stake in the Rajasthan Royals during his tenure. Warne received a 0.75% ownership share for each season from 2008 to 2011, totaling a 3% stake. With the Rajasthan Royals valued at around Rs 15,301 crore in 2026, this stake is now estimated to be worth approximately Rs 460 crore for Warne's family.

Gambhir's Achievements with KKR

Gautam Gambhir has a storied history with KKR, having led the team to IPL championships in 2012 and 2014. He later returned as a mentor and played a role in the franchise's third title win in 2024. Following this, he became the head coach of the Indian men's cricket team, leading them to triumphs in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

KKR's Current Performance

This IPL season has been tough for KKR, as they have faced three defeats in four matches, with one game against Punjab Kings ending in no result, leaving them with just one point so far.
