Philadelphia: Kylian Mbappe, representing France, netted his 19th goal in World Cup history during the Round of 16 match against Paraguay on Saturday, converting a penalty kick that brought him closer to Lionel Messi's record of 20 goals.
In the 70th minute, Mbappe executed a stutter-step before scoring, overcoming Paraguay's goalkeeper Orlando Gill to break the deadlock. The penalty was awarded after a video review confirmed that Diego Gomez had tripped him.
France's coach Didier Deschamps praised Mbappe's performance, stating, "From day one, he has shown incredible spirit and athleticism. He is a top-tier player on the field and represents the entire team when he speaks."
This goal marked Mbappe's seventh in the current tournament, tying him with Messi in the competition for the Golden Boot, awarded to the top scorer. Mbappe previously secured this title four years ago in Qatar, although Argentina triumphed over France in the final.
Remarkably, Mbappe is now the only player to have scored at least three goals in the knockout stages of three different World Cups. He faced a particularly tough opponent in Paraguay, known for their physical style of play.
Tensions escalated in the first half when Andres Cubas fouled Mbappe, leading to a brief scuffle between players. Matias Galarza also made a physical challenge, sending Mbappe to the ground.
After the match, Mbappe declined a handshake from Gill, who retaliated by throwing a ball at him.
Reflecting on the match, Mbappe remarked, "We anticipated a tough game. We can adapt to physical play; we know how to handle it. They might have expected us to play elegantly, but we were prepared. Even in that type of game, we outperformed them. Their style is just one way to play; we succeeded despite it."
This victory allows Mbappe to continue his pursuit of Messi's World Cup goal record.
