Kyle Walker Discusses Transition to Burnley and Influence of Scott Parker
Kyle Walker's Move to Burnley
New Delhi [India], July 31: Veteran defender Kyle Walker has shared that his former teammate at Tottenham, Scott Parker, who is now the manager of Burnley, played a significant role in his decision to leave Manchester City for Burnley.
Earlier this month, Walker signed a two-year contract with Burnley, marking the conclusion of an illustrious eight-year tenure at Manchester City. He joins the club following the signings of Max Weiss, Quilindschy Hartman, Axel Tuanzebe, and Loum Tchouana.
In an interview with JioHotstar, Walker expressed his appreciation for Parker's influence, stating, "He’s been a massive influence. The style of football he’s implemented—both at Burnley and previously at Fulham—was something I admired. More than that, I respect him as a person."
Walker reflected on their shared experiences, saying, "Having shared a dressing room with him at Tottenham and for England, when someone like him reaches out and invites you to join his team, it carries a lot of weight. I’m thankful for the chance he and the club have provided me."
After spending the latter part of last season on loan at AC Milan, where he made 16 appearances, the 35-year-old noted that joining Burnley offered the environment he craved after his extensive career in top clubs and a brief international stint.
"At this stage of my career, I felt the need for a change—a genuine family club. After years at prestigious clubs and a time abroad, I sought a place with a unique atmosphere. My son trains at Burnley’s facilities, and you can truly feel the spirit there and witness the vision the owners have for the club. I wanted to be part of Burnley’s journey and success," he explained.
During his time at Manchester City, Walker won 17 trophies, including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, and one Champions League. As he approaches the latter stages of his career, he aims to take on a leadership role and mentor younger players.
"With 410 Premier League appearances, I had considered it might be time for a change, but football is unpredictable. I hope to increase that number and contribute to our style of play. I aspire to be a leader on the field and hope younger players can learn from my experiences. I also want to support Scott, the manager, in every possible way," he stated.
"At this point in my career, I feel it’s crucial to give back—not just to my teammates but to everyone who has supported me. It’s essential to help educate younger players, not only about football but also about life beyond the game, and how to conduct themselves as individuals. I hope to impart that knowledge both on and off the pitch, while also helping Burnley achieve results in what I consider the best league in the world," he concluded.
