Srikkanth Supports Siraj for World Cup Selection
Kris Srikkanth, a former Indian cricketer, has expressed his support for pacer Mohammed Siraj's selection for the 2027 ODI Cricket World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. He emphasized that Indian bowlers must leverage their physical strength to adapt to the challenging South African conditions. Siraj has participated in 50 ODIs, claiming 76 wickets with an average exceeding 25. However, his appearances in limited-overs cricket have been limited over the past three years, with only nine ODIs played since the 2023 World Cup final, and he missed the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Earlier this year, he played three ODIs against New Zealand and one match in the victorious ICC T20 World Cup.
In a video shared by a sports channel, Srikkanth remarked, "He should definitely be included. In South Africa, bowlers like Siraj, who can effectively use their wrists to hit the deck, are essential. If you bowl too softly or try to swing the ball by pitching it up, you will struggle. You need bowlers who can hit hard, similar to Jofra Archer. The wrist action is crucial; a bowler with a whippy action can create a distinct sound when hitting the pitch."
Importance of the 50-over World Cup for Shubman Gill
Srikkanth also highlighted the significance of the upcoming 50-over World Cup for captain Shubman Gill, who succeeded Rohit Sharma after the ICC Champions Trophy victory. He pointed out that India has not experienced the excitement of winning the 50-over World Cup since 2011, making this tournament crucial for Gill, who will bear substantial responsibility.
He stated, "The 2027 World Cup is vital for Gill. He is a talented captain and player, excelling in ODIs. Winning the World Cup is a dream for every Indian, and no number of T20 World Cup victories can compare to the prestige of the main World Cup. The thrill of winning that title is unparalleled, making it extremely important for Shubman Gill."
However, Gill's tenure as ODI captain has faced challenges, including series defeats against Australia and England away from home, as well as a loss to New Zealand at home, which has marred his captaincy record despite his promising performance in Test matches.
As an ODI captain, Gill has scored 604 runs in 12 matches, averaging 67.11, with one century and five fifties. This year, he has amassed 561 runs in nine ODIs at an impressive average of 93.50 and a strike rate of 110.65, including a century and five fifties, with a top score of 154.
