Koneru Humpy Contemplates Withdrawal from Candidates 2026 Due to Security Concerns
Koneru Humpy's Dilemma Amid Ongoing Crisis
Indian chess prodigy Koneru Humpy is reportedly weighing the option of stepping back from the esteemed Candidates 2026 Chess tournament due to escalating security issues linked to the current crisis in West Asia. In a heartfelt message on X, she expressed, "I understand that my individual actions may not lead to significant change. However, whether I participate in the Candidates or not, I felt compelled to share my true feelings. I am sincerely thankful to everyone who has offered their support. For those who may not grasp the gravity of this situation, I prefer to leave it at that," referencing a report from worldchess.com.
Humpy's contemplation follows FIDE's firm dismissal of the possibility of relocating the event, asserting that there is no substantial threat that would justify such a decision. FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky stated, "Our preparations for the Candidates' Tournament are progressing as planned. We are closely monitoring the situation. Although there were some concerning reports about ten days ago, the situation has since stabilized." Sutovsky emphasized that they are in constant communication with local authorities to ensure the tournament's safety.
Chess legend Viswanathan Anand also expressed his support for FIDE, highlighting their commitment to selecting the best venues for major events. Nevertheless, Humpy remains uncertain, stating, "Currently, I have concerns regarding safety due to drone strikes and naval deployments in the Mediterranean. Recently, there have been bombings between Israel and Lebanon involving Hezbollah."
