Akash Deep's Injury Sidelines Him for IPL

Kolkata: The Kolkata Knight Riders have been dealt a significant blow as Indian fast bowler Akash Deep has been ruled out for a minimum of eight weeks due to a stress reaction in his lower back, effectively sidelining him from the upcoming Indian Premier League.

This injury raises concerns about his availability for the one-off Test match against Afghanistan scheduled for early June.

A source from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated, "Akash Deep is suffering from a stress reaction in his lower back. This is a recurrence, and recovery may take between 8 to 12 weeks. He will not participate in the IPL and is unlikely to be selected for the Afghanistan match."

The 29-year-old pacer from Bengal last played during the Ranji Trophy semifinal against Jammu and Kashmir, where he struggled with fitness, bowling only 13 overs in the first innings and less than seven in the second.

Currently, he is undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru and missed the KKR training camp that commenced on Wednesday.

"Healing will require significant time, along with workload adaptation and adherence to Return To Play protocols. A conservative estimate for recovery is around 10 weeks, but it could extend further," the BCCI source added.

Akash Deep's injury adds to the growing list of absentees for the three-time champions, which already includes Indian pacer Harshit Rana and their high-profile Sri Lankan recruit Matheesha Pathirana, further straining the team's fast-bowling resources.

With both Akash Deep and Rana unavailable, KKR will need to depend on their remaining domestic bowlers, such as Vaibhav Arora, Kartik Tyagi, and a returning Umran Malik.

Last season, KKR finished in a disappointing eighth place during their title defense and are already missing Rana, who is recovering from a ligament injury in his right knee.

Earlier this year, left-arm seamer Mustafizur Rahman was released following a directive from the BCCI, leading KKR to sign Zimbabwean fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani as his replacement.

The franchise, coached by Abhishek Nayar and led by Ajinkya Rahane, has been actively searching for replacements and has conducted trials with several IPL-experienced bowlers, including Akash Madhwal, Navdeep Saini, Simarjeet Singh, KM Asif, and Sandeep Warrier.

Among these, Madhwal, who impressed with a remarkable 5/5 performance for the Mumbai Indians in the 2023 Eliminator, seems to be a frontrunner, although KKR has yet to announce a replacement.

Nayar mentioned on Friday that the management is close to finalizing a replacement before their IPL opener in Mumbai on April 29, with the squad set to depart for Mumbai on April 25.

"Losing Harshit Rana is a significant setback because he has been a vital part of this team for the last few seasons, including the championship season. He has developed considerably as a cricketer over the past year, and we will certainly miss him," Nayar stated.

"However, we have been evaluating several bowlers in recent days, with input from our leadership group to determine who fits best for the role. We hope to identify someone who can make a positive impact," he added.

Despite the setbacks, team mentor Dwayne Bravo remains optimistic, asserting that the team has sufficient depth to manage the situation.

"In any tournament, losing key bowling options is unexpected, but it's something we must accept. The good news is that Indian cricket currently has a wealth of talent. Young players like Umran Malik, Kartik Tyagi, and Vaibhav Arora are exciting prospects. While we've lost some key players, I believe we have the capability to fill those gaps. From a bowling perspective, I think we will be fine," Bravo concluded.
