Kolkata Knight Riders Face Fifth Consecutive Loss in IPL 2026
KKR's Struggles Continue
The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are still in search of their first victory in IPL 2026, suffering their fifth defeat after a five-wicket loss to the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on April 17.
KKR was bowled out for 180 runs, with Cameron Green contributing a notable 79 runs. However, they could not defend this total as the Titans successfully chased down the target of 181 runs with just one ball remaining. Shubman Gill led the charge for GT with an impressive 86 runs off 50 balls, which included 8 fours and 4 sixes, achieving a strike rate of 172.00. Other contributors included Jos Buttler (25), Sai Sudharsan (22), and Glenn Phillips (19), who helped maintain a steady chase.
Bowling Performance
Varun Chakravarthy was the standout bowler for KKR, taking 2 wickets for 34 runs at an economy rate of 8.50 over four overs. Sunil Narine (1/28), Vaibhav Arora (1/35), and Ramandeep Singh (1/5) each claimed a wicket, keeping KKR competitive at various points, but the Titans managed to hold their composure in the final overs to secure the win.
Rinku Singh's Form Under Scrutiny
Following the defeat to the Gujarat Titans, discussions have shifted to Rinku Singh's ongoing struggles. The left-handed batsman has not made a significant impact in his last six matches, raising concerns about his confidence and role in the batting lineup.
In previous matches against teams like the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, Rinku batted at No. 5, scoring 33*, 35, 4, and 6 runs, but has struggled to convert starts into substantial scores. His position at No. 5 has been consistent over the past seasons, including this year's tournament.
In the recent match against GT, Rinku was moved down to No. 7, with Cameron Green, Rovman Powell, and Anukul Roy batting ahead of him. He came to the crease after Anukul's dismissal but was out for just one run.
Concerns Over KKR's Trust in Rinku Singh
Rinku's demotion in the batting order has sparked speculation about KKR's confidence in him as a finisher. Former cricketer Manoj Tiwary expressed that this change signals a lack of faith in Rinku's abilities.
During a discussion on a sports show, Tiwary criticized the decision to send Anukul Roy ahead of Rinku when the team was struggling at 87/4, stating, "You just sent Rinku Singh an indirect signal that you don't have any faith in him."
He emphasized that Rinku has been a valuable asset for KKR and should have been given a higher batting position.
Rinku's Emotional Response
Tiwary noted that Rinku appeared 'heartbroken' after his dismissal, indicating that he understood the gravity of the situation. He warned that if KKR continues with poor planning and batting decisions, they risk remaining at the bottom of the points table.
He stated, "When you had to build his confidence, you did the exact opposite by sending Rinku down the order. If KKR continues playing like this, they will remain at the bottom."
KKR has seen a series of player releases in recent years, including Shubman Gill and Pat Cummins, raising questions about their current roster decisions.
Playoff Hopes Dwindling
After a streak of six consecutive losses, KKR's chances of making it to the playoffs are diminishing. The team must win nearly all of their remaining eight matches to keep their playoff hopes alive.
