Major Sports Infrastructure Development in Bodoland

Kokrajhar, July 16: In a significant advancement for sports facilities in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has revealed plans for the construction of several football stadiums, including a major Rs 125-crore project in Kokrajhar.

This announcement was made during the closing ceremony of the Bodoland CEM Cup Football Tournament 2025, which took place at the SAI ground in Kokrajhar on Tuesday evening.

According to Sarma, the construction of the Kokrajhar stadium is set to commence this year, with an anticipated completion timeline of three years.

Additional stadiums are also planned for the districts of Udalguri, Chirang, Tamulpur, and Baksa.

“These new facilities will enhance the region’s reputation as a sports hub within the state,” Sarma stated.

Furthermore, the Chief Minister inaugurated the High-Performance Sports Training and Rehabilitation Centre located at the CHD building in Kokrajhar.

This facility, developed in partnership with Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra and his foundation, aims to provide athletes with access to premier training, rehabilitation, and injury management services.

“With this centre, our youth will have comprehensive access to physical fitness, rehabilitation, and recovery support all in one place,” Sarma noted, adding that the Abhinav Bindra Foundation will supply all necessary technical staff, equipment, and training assistance.

He referred to it as the “most advanced sports facility in the country.”

He attributed this positive change to the 2020 Bodo Peace Accord, which has fostered enduring peace and focused development in the area.

The Chief Minister's announcements followed the successful inaugural edition of the Bodoland CEM Cup, which witnessed remarkable participation.

A total of 3,760 teams and over 67,000 players from 420 Village Council Development Committees (VCDCs) across BTR participated.

In the final match, Kachugaon claimed victory over Kajalgaon with a score of 2–0. The champions received a cash prize of Rs 1.5 lakh along with the championship trophy, while the runners-up were awarded Rs 1 lakh and a first runner-up trophy.

This tournament has been celebrated as a beacon of peace and progress in the region.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently highlighted it during the 123rd episode of Mann Ki Baat, referring to it as a “symbol of unity and hope.”
