Dominant Display by Indian Batting Duo

In the recently concluded three-match ODI series against South Africa, Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma showcased their exceptional skills. Under the leadership of stand-in captain KL Rahul, India secured the series 2-1, culminating in a decisive nine-wicket victory in the final ODI held at the Dr YS Rajashekhara Reddy Cricket Stadium in Vishakapatnam on December 6.

The standout performances from Kohli and Rohit were the highlight of the series, as they reminded fans of their enduring prowess. Kohli had an outstanding series, scoring a total of 302 runs, which included two centuries and a fifty, boasting an impressive average of 151.00.

Rohit also made significant contributions, accumulating 146 runs with two fifties, averaging 48.67 across the three matches. Their performances have certainly caught the attention of selectors, demonstrating that their experience and talent remain invaluable.

Reviving Hopes for the 2027 World Cup

The remarkable performances by Kohli and Rohit have reignited discussions about their potential participation in the upcoming 2027 World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Although neither player has officially confirmed their availability, their recent form sends a clear message to the selectors.

In their last four matches, Kohli has scored two centuries and two fifties, totaling 376 runs at an average of 188.00, with two innings remaining not out. Rohit has also been in fine form, amassing 340 runs, including a century and three fifties, averaging 85 in his last five matches. Their consistent performances in ODIs against both Australia and South Africa highlight their status as key players in the format.

Selectors' Dilemma: Should Kohli and Rohit Be Central to Future Plans?

With the 2027 World Cup still two years away, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors and management are expected to formulate long-term strategies for the ODI format. A pressing question arises: should Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli be integral to these plans?

Former cricketer and BCCI selector Devang Gandhi emphasized that the team's strategy should revolve around Kohli and Rohit, cautioning against repeating the mistakes made during the 2019 and 2023 World Cup campaigns, where the middle order lacked stability.

Gandhi stated, "As long as Kohli and Rohit are around, the planning has to revolve around them. The management must stick to a pool of not more than 20 players now." He reflected on past failures, noting that the team was unprepared when the top order faltered in crucial matches.

Backing the Veteran Duo

Concerns have been raised regarding whether Kohli and Rohit can maintain their form after transitioning to only ODI cricket following their retirements from Tests and T20Is. However, former batting coach Sanjay Bangar believes their places in the team should not be questioned due to their extensive experience and consistent performances.

Bangar remarked, "I don't think the place of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the team should have been a question. Look at what they have done over so many years." He added that their experience allows them to perform effectively even with a reduced number of matches.

As they prepare for the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy, Kohli and Rohit aim to solidify their roles in India's long-term ODI strategy leading up to the 2027 World Cup.
